IBM Challenging Google in the Cloud

IBM has signed up Panasonic as a customer for its LotusLive SAAS programs. More than 150,000 workers at the Japanese electronics maker will use IBM’s hosted e-mail, social networking Web conferencing, file sharing, instant messaging and project management applications. The company unseated Microsoft’s Exchange e-mail server and a number of other collaboration solutions, including IBM’s original on-premise Lotus Notes and Domino server.

Cloud computing, specifically on the desktop with Google Apps and the imminent arrival of the web version of Microsoft Office 2010 is creating a step change in the price point for Desktop services. However, the adoption of cloud computing presents completely new challenges to printing.

Whilst not scheduled to be available until Q4 2010 printing expert ThinPrint promises to remedy the problem, with a cloud printing solution.

ThinPrint are promising to relocate the complete printing system in the cloud, the end user acting as a facilitator for direct communication between applications and printers.

Financial institutions have been quick to realise the benefits of providing online banking facilities for its customers. However, this has lead to a new challenge, to protect customers accounts from unauthorised access by cyber criminals.

What do Financial institutions need to do to protect customer accounts in the face of these ever increasing threats?

Financial institutions need to integrate existing “point solutions” into a single unified authentication infrastructure. Such an infrastructure should be built on open standards in order to leverage existing investments and faciliate the introduction of new authentication technologies.

Natwest and Barclays have both made significant investments in deploying card readers to their customers. Realistically in order that they are able to consider alternative authentication methods, a unified authentication infrastructure needs to be in place.

Gartner has coined the term “versatile authentication” to describe a platform used to manage all credentials.

Axa Bank Hungary to implement one-time password solution

AXA Bank Hungary are to implement a one-time password (OTP) solution, provided by Nordic Edge. Axa Banks customers will be sent a one time password to their mobile phone which they will enter when they login to the Axa Online Banking.

The solution will provide strong authentication, whilst avoiding the need for the customer to have any additional hardware e.g. card readers.

Privacy benefits of Federated Authentication

Today a persons personal information is typically held in numerous repositories internally within an organisation and externally. Therefore we may conclude that with the uptake of software as as service (SaaS), the number of instances of peoples personal data is likely to increase. More instances of personal data increase the possibility of privacy data being comprised.

Ordinarily this would be a logical conclusion. However, a benefit of implementing a Federated Authentication solution, is that privacy data can be maintained in a single repository.

The integration of individual applications (or services) in order to use a single repository/data store is achieved through open secure protocols. Further a complete set of personal data may not need to be proliferated across all applications, simple user role and user id may be sufficient.
